Why the people beside us matter as much as the destination.

There are trips we remember because of the place, and trips we remember because of the people who were there. In our family, travel has been an opportunity to share both. Our story stretches across four generations—grandparents, mom, me, and my son—even though we have not all taken every journey together.
I had the opportunity to take my grandparents to Spain, England, and Portugal. I have also treasured the opportunity to experience the world with my mom and my son. Those are different trips and different combinations of family, but the same gift runs through them: seeing a new place while sharing the moment with someone you love.
Our family has visited Spain, Portugal, Japan, places in Africa, Great Britain, Ireland, France, and Greece. We do not want to turn those destinations into a list of stereotypes or claim that one visit tells us everything about a country. Every community has its own stories. We are guests, and the best thing we can bring is a willingness to learn.
In particular places we visited in Africa and Japan, showing respect meant wearing full-coverage clothing even when the heat was over 100°F. That experience taught us something practical about being visitors: sometimes comfort is not the first consideration. Customs differ widely, even within a country, so it matters to learn what is appropriate for each place rather than assume.
Four generations bring different ways of noticing the world. An older family member may see something through the lens of a lifetime of memories. A child may notice a detail the adults missed. Traveling together—or sharing the stories when we return—creates conversations that outlast the trip itself.
We hope Beyond Our Own Backyard becomes a place for those memories, with real photographs and specific stories added as we share them. For now, the lesson we want to carry forward is simple: the world does not have to look like home to deserve our appreciation. It is a privilege to experience it, and an even greater gift to share that experience with family.
Think beyond your backyard. Step outside the box. Take respect along for the journey.
Sharing our family with yours—one beautifully imperfect day at a time.
