There's a special kind of magic that happens the moment a parent sits down.

The laundry is finally moved. The kitchen is reasonably clean. Everybody appears to be occupied. You find a comfortable spot, settle in, and think: I'll just sit down for five minutes.

And that's when it happens. Somebody needs help finding something. Somebody has a question. Somebody remembers something they were supposed to tell you three hours ago. And somehow, everyone suddenly knows exactly where you are.

Sound familiar?

The Five-Minute Break That Never Was

Family life can be wonderfully funny. It can also be exhausting. There are meals to prepare, appointments to remember, clothes to wash, and a seemingly endless collection of little things that need attention.

Even when we love our families dearly, sometimes we just need a few quiet minutes. And that's okay. Rest isn't something we should have to earn by finishing every last chore. Because if we're waiting for every chore to be finished, we might be waiting a very long time.

Sometimes the Laundry Can Wait

A home doesn't have to be spotless to be a happy place. The basket of laundry might still be there tomorrow. The toys may find their way back onto the floor. And there may always be another dish.

But that doesn't mean the day was unsuccessful. Maybe everyone was fed. Maybe someone needed an extra hug. Maybe the family shared a good laugh. Maybe you managed to sit down for ten whole minutes. Those things count, too.

One practical idea is to let the family know when you need a short break: “I'm going to rest for fifteen minutes. Unless it's important, please give me a little quiet time.”

Sometimes that works. And sometimes someone needs to know where their other shoe is. That's family life. 🤎

A Little Encouragement

You're allowed to enjoy your family and still need a moment to yourself. You're allowed to leave something unfinished. And you're allowed to laugh when the day doesn't go quite as planned.

A beautifully imperfect home can still be filled with love.
